Mapping Mashouf
Mapping Mashouf:
Wayfinding Tactile Map
Senior Design Project
Mapping Mashouf is a tactile map project, designed for students with visual impairments at San Francisco State University's new wellness center. The project aimed to provide these students with a comprehensive and accessible wayfinding tool to navigate the facility independently. Recognizing the university's limited provision of a one-time, vocal-only tour during orientation, the tactile map serves as a permanent resource for students to familiarize themselves with the layout and key locations within the wellness center. By incorporating tactile elements and braille labels, the map offers a tactile and visual representation of the space, empowering students with visual impairments to navigate the facility confidently and efficiently.
After conducting research through surveys with university students, interviews with visually impaired and blind students, and volunteering at The Lighthouse: Center for People Who Are Visually Impaired and Blind, a comprehensive solution has been developed to address the unique needs of individuals with visual impairments. The solution focuses on enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in various aspects of daily life, including education in fitness and health, and community engagement. It aims to empower individuals with visual impairments to navigate their surroundings independently, access information effectively, and participate fully in academic and social activities. Through a user-centered approach, the solution is tailored to meet the specific challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments, ultimately improving their quality of life and fostering a more inclusive society.
